Chuck Berry doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. He is a rock n roll pioneer, In the 50’s he was one of the first to fashion rhythm and blues in to distinctive rock and roll. His formating of songs with a guitar solo was new ,as was his showmanship. In 1986 he was one of the first musicians to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
With this portrait I wanted to pull away from the caricaturist view of Chuck Berry, the “duck walk” and the “showman ship” and show him more soberly with some abstraction and pattern. I wanted to show those guitarists hands responsible for such hits as Maybellene, Roll over Beethoven, Johnny B. Goode,You Never Can Tell etc….
