You think you’ve got it bad? You think your troubles are heaped higher than anyone else’s? All pain and no pleasure? Well it doesn’t really matter. Become a stoic and you’ll be indifferent to the pain and the pleasure! You’ll be so morally and ethically lofty you won’t feel a thing!
Stoicism was a school of Hellenistic philosophy founded in Athens by Zeno of Citium in the 3rd century BC. It’s basic teachings were that one should exercise control over destructive emotions like jealousy and envy. One of the most important aspects of stoicism is improving an individuals moral and ethical well being, You should align your will with the universe.
Whatever hardships or troubles come your way you should shoulder that burden and get on with it. Epictetus said, be “sick and yet happy, in peril and yet happy”
Cleanthes a student of Zeno put it simply that a man without stoic virtue is “like a dog tied to a cart, and compelled to go wherever it goes.”
